Theme
Flowers, greenery, agriculture, and food support our lives and daily living, bringing inspiration and smiles to people across generations and ethnicities.
Humanity is sustained by nature, including plant life, and lives within the tides and cycles of life.
As the world is at a turning point, moving from a focus on economic prosperity to a qualitatively mature society, the exposition to be held in 2027 aims to reacknowledge the diverse values of plants as a natural capital asset. It seeks to utilise these values in creating a sustainable future and a society where no one is left behind. Additionally, it aims to make visible the concepts of coexistence with nature and a sense of happiness as part of a new scenery of the future.
Sub-Themes
To develop and materialize the main theme, we have set the following four sub-themes:
-
Co-adaptation
Harmony with nature
Introducing the power of nature, we propose to the world the foundation for sustainable, safe, and attractive cities through green infrastructure.
-
Coexistence
Co-existence through greenery and agriculture
While learning from the spirit of Japanese agriculture, we propose a model for Green Communities where people share and support each other through greenery and agriculture.
※Green Community: A community that actively engages in developing and maintaining green infrastructure, forming the foundation of mutual support.
-
Co-Creation
Creation of new industries
We propose creating and nurturing industries that generate new value, such as adding high value to horticulture and agriculture, creating new technologies and varieties, and expanding the life sciences sector through collaboration across different industries.
-
Co-operation
Resolution through co-operation
By engaging in mutual communication, exchange, and sharing with a diverse range of people, including domestic and international companies, educational and research institutions, and citizens, we aim to contribute to the realization of a society that values multicultural coexistence, friendship, and peace, and respect for diversity.

- About the City of Yokohama and the Former Kamiseya Communication Facility
-
Since opening as an international port in 1859, Yokohama has served as a gateway for horticultural plants. It became a leading center for Japan’s flower trade, exporting numerous plants, including lilies, and pioneering the import of Western flowers such as roses and tulips. Yokohama has continually shared Japan’s outstanding plant and horticultural culture with the world.
The event venue is located in the suburbs of the City of Yokohama (Asahi Ward and Seya Ward) at the former Kamiseya Communication Facility, a vast area of approximately 242 hectares that was returned by the U.S. military in 2015. Of this, around 100 hectares will be used for the exposition. Due to restricted land use over many years, the area boasts a rich natural environment, including farmland, gently rolling grasslands, and precious natural resources such as the headwaters of the Aizawa and Izumi rivers, which flow from north to south, and the unique valley terrain.
